In your post you said that if you login with your account the black screen doesn't appear...but that doesn't make sense. If the black screen appears before the login screen, it shouldn't matter who you are logging in with, since the login procedure takes palce after the black screen comes up.

When I tried to log in locally to the SBS the login prompt was there but after entering the user / pass it stalled at a blank screen. ctrl alt del was not even responsive. I put this down to bad luck but it has done this every time I try open the DB. I can copy it back to my local drive and it runs fine.

If I turn the computer on and don't press F8, the windows screen will come up, load, and then I get a black screen with the hourglass that does not go away.
